  • DAVIDE PIZZIGONI

  • Born in Milan, he graduated in Architecture in Rome in 1984. In 1986 he staged his first one-man exhibition of paintings (presentated by Alessandro Mendini). In 1987 his partnership with Olivetti began, which culminated in 1990 with the publication of a book of drawings of the cities of the “Thousand and One Nights”. In 1994, he created the sets and costumes for “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” by Richard Strauss at the Opera Theatre of Zurich (director, Cesare Lievi). In 1995 he designed the sets and costumes for Aflred Schnittke’s “Gesualdo” at the Vienna Staatsoper, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich. He has designed the sets and costumes for numerous operas and ballets for the New National Theatre of Tokyo. His experience in theatre led him in 1995 to begin a research on space, which increasingly took the shape of a fully-fledged investigation on “La Forma del Vuoto” (“The Form of Emptiness”). This research continues today, with his projects in which mobile parts are capable of visibly modifying the space, thus highlighting its plastic and dynamic potentials. Davide Pizzigoni has held one-man shows in Milan, Rome, New York, Tokyo and Osaka. The first monograph dedicated to his work was published in 1990 with articles by Franco Purini and Marco Vallora. He devised and produced a collection of books for Electa-Mondadori about opera, whicih are nothing short of spectacular works of art on paper; the following have been published: The Magic Flute, Carmen, Madame Butterfly and Rigoletto. Pizzigoni’s work is held in European collections as well as in Israel, the United States, Argentina and Japan.
